Writing opportunities to keep you game fit

Girl lying on a bed with a notepad, writing.

Flex your writing muscles with writerly competitions and opportunities.

Now that you’ve ditched your 2023 New Year’s resolutions to get fit and quit drinking, you might be looking for a more realistic challenge. Well, look no further! I’ve curated a number of fabulous competitions and opportunities to get you off the couch and flexing your writing muscles. As an author and Melbourne copywriter, trying my hand at new writing styles keeps me on my toes without breaking a sweat.

Competitions come in many shapes and sizes. From 50-word flash fiction sprints to novel length marathons, and are aimed at all levels of experience. But if competitions aren’t your thing, why not apply for a fellowship, mentorship, hot desk or residency? Initiatives designed to give you space, time and, sometimes, financial assistance to write.

The arts ARE underfunded. Many writers rely on initiatives like this to grow their profiles or to feed themselves! Whatever your motivation, writing competitions and other opportunities are a great way to hone your craft, broaden your skill-set, and generally get game fit. So, slip into your comfiest runners and leotard and read on…
