Blood Makes Noise — Now Showing!

An insightful, personal story. A must-see.

As a Melbourne copywriter, I’m lucky enough to write across all kinds of subjects. But one of my favourite things to report on is the arts in my local community, which is heaving with creative types and their endeavours. A new play, Blood Makes Noise, is one of these — a must-see performance written by its teenage cast about what it’s like growing up in post-pandemic 2022.

Kez and Jem have been best mates since kindy, supporting each other through school, Jem’s mum’s crippling anxiety and Kez’s parent’s divorce. But when Kez declares a love for Jem that asks more of Jem than he can give, the friendship they both depend on is thrust into unchartered and, ultimately, treacherous territory…

Blood Makes Noise is a honest and gripping tale of young male friendships — exploring more broadly the gap between who we are and who we’d like to be. The play examines mental illness, sexuality, friendship, and love from a young person’s perspective, offering many candid and sometimes challenging insights.

Director, Anne Gollan, is a Melbourne based drama teacher and drama therapist who works with children and young people to help them tell and make sense of their own stories. Blood Makes Noise is drawn from eight months of interviews, storytelling, and role-play with the actors.

‘I wanted to create a play that the kids had ownership of. I feel honoured to be in a position where they trust me enough to invite me into their world to share their stories.’

Paired with an original musical score and cinematic projections, Blood Makes Noise, is not only a rare window into the lives of our young people but a captivating, one-of-a-kind theatrical experience that should not be missed.

Performances: 14th, 15th and 16th November 2022 at 7pm at the Brunswick Mechanics Institute.
