WRITING PROMPTS — to help get your creative juices flowing...
LESSONS FROM A MELBOURNE COPYWRITER
Are you struggling to get words on the page? Or, maybe you’re just looking to flex your writing muscle? To stretch your copywriting legs and crack your narrative knuckles.
If so, why not give writing prompts a go...
Writing prompts are a great way to ease into a piece and to improve your literary form. As a Melbourne copywriter and author, I often use prompts to generate new ideas and to flesh out existing ones.
Prompts come in all shapes and sizes, from creative writing drills to translating music into words (Hot Tip: Dubussy’s The Snow is Dancing is perfect for this).
Generally, prompts are timed. But, the most important thing to remember when undertaking one, is to turn off the judgy voice in your brain. The voice that whispers, ‘give up, this is garbage’ or ‘you’d better go back and fix up that paragraph’. In my case, it’s often, ‘wouldn’t you better off cleaning out the fridge...’
Press mute and write through the doubts and uncomfortable feelings.
Interested in giving one a go?
Below is a prompt to get your creative juices flowing so that you can think big and write broadly.
Remember, your response to the prompt should not be polished or edited. The words should effectively fall from your head onto the page, without interference from your inner critic.
Once the timer sounds, check your response for hidden gems — possible characters, story ideas or themes. It’s amazing what the mind produces when you allow it a little freedom.
So, go grab your notebook or device and let’s get scribbling.
Writing Prompt: WINTERY WORLDS
Imagine you are standing lost and alone in a wintery landscape, on a snow-covered slope, dotted with bare trees. The ground is frozen beneath your feet and the sun filters weakly between the tree branches as it sinks. Soon it will be dark. Pitch black. You shiver, expelling ghost breath into the air. Suddenly, there’s a deafening crack nearby... Continue this scene. Write for 20 minutes.
